You know, back in 1983 [wrong date on previous rant – damn – even further back] I was also struggling with wanting to understand ‘everything’. Still am. Hence, whilst married at the time with responsibility for two kids and working at MU [Melbourne University] I made the most of the free [Thank you Gough] tertiary education. I completed the hardest IQ test over 3 hours the devil incarnate had ever developed to let people know they were wanting combined with a full day exam. I then shopped degrees and parts thereof at MU and RMIT. Law, finance and philosophy all drew attention. Especially philosophy and ‘EGO’ and ‘Formal Logic maths’. I finished with a bunch of irrelevant qualifications including masters’ level and still ended up with a whole lot of unanswered questions wanting to understand why certain things happen and what could be done to mitigate subsequent ‘havoc’. Fail!
Curiosity unfulfilled because I could not fathom at an even minor level what drives some to inflict their misery onto others and/or to pursue grandiose plans at the expense of common decency and respect. Worse, why the impacted masses not only allow this to happen but support escalating dysfunctions. Why don’t we learn from history? Hitler, good bloke with world leaders clambering to say nice things until September 1st 1939 when he invaded Poland and all those sycophantic leaders threw up their hands in very latent abject denial, ‘not me – never liked the bloke’.
Has anything changed? Nup.
Even on our small stage, we have our ex premier in a cosy little cabal with a bunch of known world despots and seemingly as happy as a clam. Remember he is responsible for Victoria being in irreconcilable debt to the Chinese through borrowings and employing Chinese companies to action his ‘big build’ [John Holland]. How about circa $30,000,000 a day in debt interest alone. No wonder he got an invitation to despotville! What goes on inside this moron’s head when he feels comfortable sanctifying grandiose ‘look at me’ stupidity whilst we have homeless Australian kids sleeping rough on a daily basis and education levels diving towards international rock bottom eludes me. How far could $30m a day go to fixing this problem! The article below on EGO [part of a thesis and yes it passed albeit I penned it some 42 years ago] was an attempt to provide a framework for my disordered brain to try and understand similar acts of ego / ID led dysfunction,
Didn’t work then and doesn’t work today. Still disordered.
Sometimes I feel the need to grab Albanese by the shoulders and shake vigorously whilst shouting ‘wake up’. Remember that good bloke Hitler? [Until he wasn’t]. The day Albanese did squat about the sub human attack on Israel seemingly supporting Hamas and his subsequent opera house debacle was an eye opener. Some would say his voter base is Muslim? I am not Jewish nor religious [despite being brainwashed for umpteen years by those dreaded Presbyterians] but I can recognise sub-human attacks as wrong on every level. Remember Hitler? The same level of disgust I thrust at Putin for his homicidal invasion of Ukraine or Xi for massive human rights abuse or Kim for starving his people into lockstep or Trump, the bloke we call a friend on our side, currently destroying the US economy and with almost daily revelations of moral bankruptcy.
Does all this come down to ‘EGO’? And, why do glassy eyed people just allow
this to happen? I sort of understand ‘ID’
in that these people have allowed their ‘ID’ to subjugate societal reality but
that doesn’t explain why we as a civilised and presumably thinking group let it
happen. “The only thing necessary for the
triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing” [J.S Mill].
So, what’s the point? No idea, other than watching societal norms being eroded by letting good egos and super egos be deviated by the amoral side of the ‘ID’. Perhaps it’s easier? Are we reverting? Boris the caveman had no such dilemmas.
Solution? Also, no idea.
EGO [If you
don’t have one, you’re dead.]
EGO is good! Why? Because your controlling conscious ‘EGO’ [learnt self identity and possibly self affirmations] keeps your ‘ID’ [primal, instinctive and amoral impulses] under control along with the ‘Super Ego’ [parental and societal learnt values] and allows you to enjoy a distinctive balanced personal identity including awakened self esteem exuding confidence for all to see and admire. This in turn enables rational decision making keeping one’s ‘ID’ subordinate.
So? Those who suffer a fractious ego also struggle with personal invisibility and/or create havoc if their ‘ID’ is allowed to run the shop lashing out whilst dismissing and ignoring the super ego’s learnt values attempting to stabilize their mindset. Havoc.
However, I believe we need all three as the ‘ID’ gives us early warning of dysfunction and allows a conditional response from the civilized ego balanced with the ‘right thing to do’ from the Superego. The devil on one shoulder and an angel on the other both vying for attention. Me Me Me
Nice to know but bloody impossible to action on any level. However awareness of self and subsequent driven actions helps. It also helps understand others struggling with the balance of intercommunication dilemmas.
In this respect ‘entitlement’ is crucial because we all need recognition from others. However, when entitlement given freely by others becomes ‘self’ entitlement it perhaps shows one’s EGO is being subjugated by a rampant ‘ID’.
Humble is good but so is pride in accomplishments recognised through and by others.
It’s your ego, love it, believe in it and don’t let others interfere just because they are imbalanced!
